Imagine being in a row boat big enough for 12-13 people. You’ve been there all night, you’re tired, it’s pitch black and you can barely see your hand in front of your face. If it wasn’t for Judas’ bad breath and Simeon snoring, you’d be tempted to think you were alone. With only the stars and the moon to guide you a massive storm hits just about 3AM. The wind is tossing you to and fro like a lil toy in a toddler’s wet hands. It’s a bit off-putting, but nothing you haven’t seen before. Off in the distance, yet gaining on you, you and your homies see a ghost walking…on…the water! Just when fear puts your soul in a headlock and squeezes life from your lungs, a sweet familiar voice calls out from the figure, “It’s just me, Jesus.” Jesus is the one who, not a few hours earlier, fed about 20,000 people with a coupla fish samiches.  And because you are nosey and brave- but most importantly, you believe the voice so you test it out. “Well, if it’s really you, can I come out there with you? I wanna do that!” And when the Lord would have granted the request, you would not have even thought about it!

That woulda been me! While the others, like Thomas, would’ve been contemplating jumping ship and taking their chances on rough sea rather than facing a Hannibal Lector on the water; I would have climbed out of the boat and gone straight to the Lord. After all, it’s the Lord!

Peter, at least, had Jesus as an example – a living, breathing being. Abraham had Far Less! He had a voice in His head telling him to “Go.” What?!?! Go? Go where? And to whom am I talking? Towards which of the FOUR directions would you like for me to go? How long am I going to be there? I would have had mad questions before ever moving my entire existence to some unknown location. Genesis 12:1-4:

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.

Look closely. There is no gap between God’s command and Abram’s obedience. He just obeyed. Packed his belongings, his family, and left…without a business plan, an education, prior knowledge of the voice, exit strategy, 401k, or anything. He just did what the voice said do. Abe was a JUGGERNAUT who Walked on Words.

In Romans 4, Abe is named a “friend of God.” He earned that title because when he had no reason, EXCEPT THE VOICE, to believe for Bigger, Better, More or Greater, he did so. And to his extra credit, he had everything working against him. His johnson wasn’t working, his wife thought it was silly, he wasn’t the most honest guy and he was a people pleaser; but, he believed God enough to move on what He said.

This is how the Lord works. He only gives you a little at a time. He requires step one to be complete before He unleashes the whole plan. He only gives a lamp for your steps, not an L.E.D. for the whole path. Lately, the Lord has been asking the same thing of me. I am Not a haphazard person. I will always have a plan. I can chart 7 courses to my job and I only live 5 miles away. And I can see the whole route before I ever get into the elevator to descend to my car. But for the past coupla years the Lord has been asking me to follow His route to work – literally. Sound childish? Maybe. But, it’s the childlike faith that will earn the keys to the Kingdom of God, which isn’t heaven by the way. It’s the public and private evidence of the rule of the Lord Jesus Christ within my person and my culture because of my obedience to the King of Kings. Therefore I see learning to hear and obey that still small voice as my inner GPS to do something that doesn’t seem to matter as practice for the journey of reaching my destiny.
