Addicted to His Whisper

Have you ever heard the Lord’s voice? What did it sound like? How often do you hear it? What did you do in order to be able to hear it?

Of course, if you read the book that God co-signs entirely, you will find that His voice is powerful enough to level a forest of the greatest trees or delicate enough to caress the face of a child – just depends on what is needed at the time. I don’t believe that I can say enough about His voice, except that I’m addicted to it.

When I was 21, I remember moving out of my father’s home to live with my boyfriend. Things were ok – if you don’t mind everything from Ramen noodles to This Is It EVERY day. I considered it to be a luxury to be in a relationship. However, it was one that I was paying for with the health and holiness of my soul. Then he asked me to marry him. And I was faced with a question: do I enjoy this luxury at the high price of losing my soul? It was this request that I’m, to this day, waiting to answer. It was a dream come true. The possible start to the life that I had always dreamt of. We lay in the bed in a small room in an apartment on the south side of the city; and just as if I were terrified by a horrible car accident or caught in some freak national disaster, my life with him flashed before my eyes. Now, I thought that only happens when your life is in jeopardy by some dangerous painful threat. But, that was just it, my purpose in God was in jeopardy and His perfect intended will for my life was at stake. In one flash I knew in my knower that if I didn’t go home immediately, I was going to regret it for the rest of my life. I was faced with a choice- I could go forward with what felt faintly like my dream or I could choose that still small conviction that was bigger than any love that filled my heart for this man who was head over heels for me. It wasn’t an audible voice. It was a simple knowing imbedded in my soul, that place where life is lived, experienced and interpreted.

With hindsight clearly in my rear view, I am sure of 3 things regarding the Lord’s voice.

#1. The voice of the Lord is a whisper

Elijah was tempted to see the Lord’s voice in a dreadful quake or a fatal fire. However, the Lord used those boisterous sounds to shove Elijah close to His voice that shows up in a sweet whisper… M-m-m! Why a whisper? Why would the Almighty Adonai choose to speak to the great prophet, who was running for his life, in a whisper? I can think of 3 or 5 reasons. There is only 1 that matters right now. Whispers require proximity. If you need to hear the Voice of the Lord, you better get CLOSE.

#2 The voice of the Lord creates

NOTHING on this Earth would be in existence if the Lord didn’t speak. I LOVE that Hillsong joint “So Will I.” It’s a dope rendition that speaks about the Creating Power of the Lord’s. A few of the lyrics that have inspired me EVERY DAY for the past 2 weeks are:

You spoke to the dark
And fleshed out the wonder of light

And as You speak
A hundred billion galaxies are born
In the vapor of Your breath the planets form
If the stars were made to worship so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You've made
Every burning star
A signal fire of grace
If creation sings Your praises so will I

God of Your promise
You don't speak in vain
No syllable empty or void
For once You have spoken
All nature and science
Follow the sound of Your voice

And as You speak
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
Evolving in pursuit of what You said
If it all reveals Your nature so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You say
Every painted sky
A canvas of Your grace
If creation still obeys You so will I

Elohim is one of the names by which the Lord is known. One of the definitions of Elohim is “Creator.” Just think, He said it once, and all of life is still in multiplying fashion. Elohim is vital because, being made in His image having a creative edge is imperative to having a fulfilling life.

#3 The voice of the Lord solidifies purpose

Rock with me. Jesus turns 30, finds his cousin in a river and gets baptized and in an instance, that to this day has never happened before or since; where the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are present on earth all at once. Jesus the Son in the flesh, the Spirit in the form of a Dove and the audible voice of the Father. What was He saying? He could audibly be heard confirming the existence of His begotten Son, initiating and solidifying His Purpose.

If 2019 is going to be sustained with BANG and BOOM, you had better fall in love with the voice of the Lord. So get close, listen, hear and obey.

 Get like me!
